Conservation of Biodiversity is a shared responsibility between government,
the education sector and the community. It has four components:
- Understanding - primarily involving Universities, Government and amateur specialist groups.
- Planning - primarily involving Government, Local Government and community based consultative groups.
- Management - primarily involving the Department for Environment and Heritage,
Local Government, private landholders and volunteer action groups.
- State of Environment Reporting.
Within Government the primary responsibility for the conservation of biodiversity
rests with the Department for Environment and Heritage.
The Department for Environment and Heritage
is divided into two broad functional areas in relation to the conservation of Biodiversity:
- Park Management - managing the development, use and protection of
specific parks and reserves.
- Biodiversity Conservation - provision of scientific understanding,
directions and support for conservation management throughout the State, by
implementing a series of conservation programs and by providing specialist
biodiversity management support services.
